What's everyone's reason for coming to Oppo?
I'm here originally from Jalopnik, but I found this site from something. Once here I began to comment on here seeing everyone's passion for cars in one way or another. I'm glad I was able to get authorship because I'm now able to gain knowledge about cars and share my own passion with you all.

Feel free to comment on what led you to this site.

I'm honestly not too sure how I got here. I've been here since 2010 though.

I came here fairly soon after I discovered Jalopnik, and even though I'm relatively younger I enjoy the fact that every one shares their passion and interests in such an open and accepting community.

Yeah same here. I'm also relatively young, well not relatively, I am. I'm 16 but been around cars and racing all my life so it's developed into a love that's got a special place in my heart that's never going to go away. After going to Watkins Glen my entire life I've got this feeling like it's my true home away from home and nowhere else can match the happiness I feel at that track.

Truthfully I think what lead me here was a story on the front page that started in oppositelock. But after seeing how the community on oppo acts I really started paying about as much attention to oppo as the front page. I truly mean it when I say oppo is probably one of if not the best web community I've ever seen. People can actually be supportive, informative, funny, and friendly here.

I'm a Jalopnik transplant too. I have been on Jalop for probably 5 years and I never posted. I like it here and (obviously), think its more worth posting to a smaller crowd.

I'm 15 and I'm very envious you've had such an opportunity to live near a race track, especially Watkins Glen. I'm very envious but I wish you luck. I've been trying my hardest to get the experience to become a race engineer, but I live an hour away from the city, so it's hard to be interested in cars when not many people think much of them.

I think it's easier to be in the country or in an area that appreciates cars more. I've got an oval not even a mile from me and WG is about 2 hours from me.

Man that sounds really great, I mean I live about an hour from Lime Rock but I only just discovered that till recently. And yeah I agree that it probably is easier, plus most of the teenagers I know that are remotely interested in cars only wanna rice out their Hondas which makes being serious about it a little more difficult.

For me it was finding Gawker, then Jalopnik then long, long after that Oppo. Only really got into Oppo after NuKinja, but now it's one of my permanent tabs.

My friend who is into cars has very similar tastes to me. I don't mind mods if it's not distasteful. I really want a Volvo 240 though. It is a beautiful little car but I don't like the people who are "interested" in cars as an object rather than a part of themselves like it do. A car is part of me and I'm a part of the car when I drive, there's nothing more fun than driving on a country road.

I had been reading Jalopnik for a while, and was lurking here (back when it was just called Off Topic). I didn't start posting until just over 6 years ago though.

I stay here because of the people. It's nice to be in an off-topic group where there aren't political pissing-contests all the time and where everyone is accepted. Where you can talk about cars or whatever else you're into with good people.

I would love a 240, but I'm going for a Lexus SC300, it's comfortable without being bland, but mainly because it's one of the only RWD cars my da becaused approves of cause it's a Lexus and we have always had either a Toyota or Lexus.

I like oppo because I can nerd out about car stuff without being hounded about how to fix this or that. Don't get me wrong, I like helping, but in other forums all you get are people wanting to know all sorts of things and interjecting their own terribly wrong ideas and in all likely hood messing lots of other people up. At least here everyone wants to learn and interact in a positive way, rather than assert their own opinion and flame everyone else. When I get customers at work who say "well I read this on a forum, do what they say" I just want to scream at them and charge double. But if I were to get an oppo customer who said something along the lines of "someone on oppositelock had this experience, what do you think?", I would probably give them a labor discount.

I found about Jalopnik thanks to the old DOTS and Dream Garage articles that ran regularly on the front page. Soon after I followed a link to Oppo and have been here ever since. Well, save for a few months following the switch to Kinja, when the old accounts were deactivated, because I didn't feel like making a Google or Facebook account, but I became bored not having Oppo to talk to, so I came back. :p

I originally found Oppo from Jalopnik. I was searching for car news and came across Jalopnik. I decided to stay because it is one of the least volatile places on the internet. Even though I don't have a license yet (one more year!!), I still love this site.

I first discovered Oppo when I saw a post shared to the front page - I lurked as a commenter here for a few months before finally deciding to ask for authorship privleges.

What I love about Oppo is the openness along with the willingness to accept and help other people in times of difficulty, question or need. I'm only 17 and I still have a year to wait until I can apply for a driving licence, but the great thing about Oppo is that I can talk about cars, my main passion, without fear of being completely embarrassed if I get something wrong. It's also a great place to share opinions and learn. And funnily enough, because I live on the other side of the world from the vast majority of Opponauts, I find it nice to be able to share tales from my side of the planet, whilst also being Oppo's night watchman and bidding you all good night as I eat breakfast.

Aesthetics, mostly. Or maybe I should say "trying to understand the viewpoint of the aesthetics as embodied by the Oppo community."

Why are certain wheels "good looking" and others not? Why is a front end "beautiful" and another just a rice rocket smiley face? (ok.. I know the answer to that one.) What gives a backend wonderfulness, and another buttugliness?

I dunno, yet. I've liked cars (more a scratch mechanic than a driver through necessity) and done driving courses (Bob Bondurant High Performance Driving 4 day course at Sears Point in the late 80's) so appreciate the skill and focus of driving, but I know it's not me in my everyday persona, since I find it drains energy instead of adding to it, though it *is* satisfying. What I do want, is the "why" something is considered to be 'good' and the "why" it may be considered 'bad'. This has taken me a long time to start to internalize, and I depend on my exposure to Oppo to help me get there since so many seem to already "get it". (Which is why I mostly lurk since I don't know shit about cars from the aspect of Oppo-land anywho.)

My goal, strange as this may be, is to find my own definition of beauty in a tool that is so central to our current cultural life where I can express it in a way that embodies my need for function (currently top priority) with a newly acquired aesthetic. I'm not in a rush.. just in love with the viewpoints.

I found Jalopnik through Twitter, actually. After I had enough of my experiment with Twitter, I kept visiting Jalopnik. I loved the QOTD posts and Future Classics and I wanted to participate in the awesome conversations, but I was stuck in the grey. I then found Oppo. The timing was right and a "Welcome new Opponauts" post went up, and I didn't hesitate to ask for authorship. I had found a place on the internet where manual Passat W8 wagons and Cadillac Allante's are cooler than Corvettes and Mustangs. Almost one year later, I've gotten to know some awesome people, participate in a once in a life time experience to help someone else write a story here, and grow a subculture of car culture into it's own entity.
